Yes, it is hard to believe that  it was snowing only last week.

No, wait. This is North Carolina. Right? Believable!

I took advantage of today’s fair weather (that reminds me that prescription sunglasses may be on the horizon) and went out for lunch with the intention procuring some prime patio seating. I met up with Tammy from Goodwill and we headed down to Sticks & Stones on Walker Avenue. It was odd being in that area again since I hadn’t really spent time there after my days at UNCG. In any case, we calmed ourselves in the anticipation of Spring-at-last while we waited for our lunch. Sticks & Stones runs a lunch special of a slice of pizza with your choice of one topping, a soup or salad off of the menu, and a drink for $5.95. With my 10% discount for Sticks & Stones with my Caring Club card, it was a much more appetizing choice than another pick from the boxes and boxes (and boxes) of Clif Bars in my desk (though, yum)!

The Caring Club card offers discounts to Sticks & Stones and to more of your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite) restaurants in town. Learn more about the card and how you can use it to impact the community in multiple ways.

No more secrets:

Real people tweet for unitedwaygso. They experience experiences, gather information, and share that information to their tweeple.

Ok, first of all, I should probably stop writing in the third-person plural. Second, that was the first time that I have ever typed the word “tweeple.” Tweeps?Aden and Lynne

Aden | I (Aden Hailemariam) am a Communications Specialist in the Marketing & Communications department at United Way of Greater Greensboro. I manage the social media accounts and do all things marketing. In addition, I coordinate the Latino Professional Forum that has recently become affiliated with United Way of Greater Greensboro. I became a part of the staff here in November of last year and since then it has been an experience that has brought together the names and faces and experiences that I have had since I first came to Greensboro as a freshman at UNCG in 2003. And I still have a way to go!

Lynne | Lynne Brandon is a volunteer with United Way of Greater Greensboro which includes her committee work with UWGG. Oh, and she is so much more! From Lynne’s website, you’ll know that she is a freelance journalist, researcher and reporter with 13 years experience including work as an editor in the publishing world. Her work in corporate communications includes teaching professional development courses, marketing and intranet content front page manager. We appreciate the insight that professionals like Lynne bring to the table in committee work at UWGG. It is the time and dedication of so many types of volunteers that help to achieve progress in assessing and addressing critical issues in our the greater Greensboro area.

With unitedwaygso, we intend for UWGG to connect to the Greensboro community and share its vision, mission and goals that, by design, reflect the concerns of the Greensboro community itself.

Reply to or DM unitedwaygso and let us know what kind of info you’d like to see us tweet or how you think we’ve been tweeting so far.

Look out for ^AH and ^LB!

Young Leaders

Greensboro, NC - On Saturday, February 27 at 10:00 am, United Way Young Leaders will be gathering to do some spring cleaning at Bell House on 2400 Summit Avenue. United Way Young Leaders, a donor group of United Way of Greater Greensboro’s young professionals between the ages of 22-45, will be preparing to pressure wash the exterior of the visitation house, clean windows, tend to the landscape, clean gutters and paint chairs. This will all be done with two end goals in mind; getting Bell House’s visitation house ready for spring while providing a more welcoming facility for Bell House residents.

Bell House is a unique environment for adults with orthoneurological and physical disabilities allowing residents a chance for freedom and independence. Bell House enables residents to live independently but with the support and care that their physical conditions require.

United Way of Greater Greensboro has been partnering with Bell House on projects since late 2009. Tomorrow, United Way Young Leaders will be assisting with the visitation house. This home, on the property of Bell House, allows the residents a space to entertain their families, friends and others, away from their rooms and the high-traffic communal areas of the main facility. A solid structure, the visitation house needs cosmetic enhancements and some care by way of cleaning. “As Young Leaders, we dedicate our talent and time to positively impact United Way partner agencies and programs.  Through our work with these agencies and programs, we develop a greater understanding of the effort and strategy behind the work of United Way of Greater Greensboro to better serve our community,” says Crystal Edwards Oldham, Communications Chair for United Way Young Leaders.

United Way Young Leaders mission is to make a positive and lasting impact throughout the Greater Greensboro community by mobilizing active young professionals who are actively seeking ways to give, advocate, and volunteer through United Way of Greater Greensboro. United Way Young Leaders give annual membership gifts of $120.

United Way RedI have eaten more heart-shaped food (or “food”) this week than I could have ever anticipated. The day’s coming this Sunday (you know what I’m talking about) and if you’ve stepped into almost any store, you’ve been met by a bulging display of reds, pinks, hearts and the cutest bears and frogs and dancing gorillas…wait, dancing what?

Valentine’s Day Random Fact:

We have a thing called…”United Way red.”

It’s true! See, I even made myself a little table.

If you are compelled to share your love for United Way but replacing all of your reds, here is the guide:

Color Name: United Way Red’s what we call it ’round these parts. (Excessive use of apostrophes, sorry.)

RGB: 254, 35, 10

Hex: #FE230A

Pantone: 179

CYMK: 0, 85, 89, 0

Hope you enjoyed today’s random fact! Stay tuned for some more ways to share the love this week as we beat the gusty winds to make it through Sunday–halfway through February already!
