United Way Thriving At 3 Celebrates

The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world’s largest early childhood education association, with nearly 80,000 members and a network of over 300 local, state, and regional Affiliates.

The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child™ in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8 ) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child™ is a time to plan how we—as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation—will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.

United Way of Greater Greensboro is happy to celebrate this week with thousands of advocates for early childhood development throughout the United States. In Greensboro, United Way has affirmed our community’s priority of investing early to create better opportunities later in life. Thriving at 3 is United Way of Greater Greensboro’s early childhood development initiative which provides direct services to families and convenes the community to promote information sharing and collaboration.

Thriving at 3 will celebrate the Week of The Young Child by hosting a community Lunch-N-Learn on April 25th. Marian F. Earls, MD, FAAP, Pediatrics Medical Director at Triad Adult & Pediatrics Medicine, and Lead author on American Acadmeny of Pediatrics (AAP) Statement on Screening for Post Partum Depression in primary care, and Co Chair, NC IOM Task Force on Early Childhood Mental Health will be the guest speaker for this event. The discussion will be on postpartum depression, toxic stress, and the impact on the infant’s early brain development. Strategies for promotion, prevention, and intervention in the primary care medical home will be described, as well as for community response and resources including activities and special points of interest.

Registration is on a first come first serve basis and will be closed Friday April 20, 2012. For more information, contact Traci McLemore at 336-378-5040 or traci.mclemore@unitedwaygso.org.

I was pretty excited after successfully backing into a diagonal space in a parking lot when I noticed, towering over me, a Live United billboard. There a few or more of these United Way billboards by the Ad Council around the city. Have you seen the billboards around? Where?

Last Friday, September 10th, was Back to Football Friday across the nation and the day lent the theme for the United Way of Greater Greensboro staff meeting as the internal campaign committee hyped up the staff for the upcoming 2010 campaign.

Follow Back to Football Friday tweets here with #footballfriday.

What’s an internal campaign? Well, just as companies across greater Greensboro have employee campaigns to raise money for their community through United Way, United Way staff have a campaign!

I’ve been catching in the news the events that local companies have as a part of their United Way employee campaigns. Talk about fun! I remember the first day I started at UWGG was the first day of the internal campaign–it was surreal! It was 9 in the morning and a staff meeting as the internal campaign committee dressed up, had games and skits as they hyped up their colleagues to kick off their own employee campaign.

This year our internal campaign theme is…football! Check out photos below of our break from last Friday’s staff meeting as three staff members competed to make it through an obstacle course and win by correctly answering a question about youth health and wellness. We’ve got a full schedule of events this month to kick off our internal campaign. What events does your employee campaign have on its schedule?

Obstacle course contestants were UWGG staff:

Keith Barsuhn, President and CEO

Jenn Gipp, Director of Tocqueville Societies

Gretchen O’Shay, Vice President of Donor Relations and Leadership Giving

As United Ways across the country recognize UPS for a record $1 Billion in Giving to Communities this week, our local UPS employees continue to build support for a strong employee campaign with United Way of Greater Greensboro.

The Greensboro UPS campaign kickoff was Thursday, July 15, 2010 and consisted of three rallies to drum up enthusiasm for the upcoming campaign. The rally was added to regular management meeting times and employees learned more about United Way of Greater Greensboro and the appreciation United Way and the community had for each employee’s gift. Speakers included United Way staff and partner agency representatives. UPS management also summarized UPS’s goals and expectations for the campaign.

Shoutout to Jeff York from Star Crook, Donor Relations Manager at UWGG. Jeff would also like to thank his UPS colleagues, Bill Hoffman, Jonathan Goodmon, Frank Farrar and Kaven Smith, for helping to make the rallies a great time with their coordination.

Representatives from UWGG member agencies as well Starlyn added to the excitement at the rallies. We passed out water, squeeze water bottles, doughnuts, balloons and fliers. Everyone was greeted as they came in to the building and and learned more about the UPS campaign kickoff–one of many in the history of UPS that has garnered commitments from employees to continue to Live United. Check out our Facebook album for some photos from the rallies last month at the Greensboro UPS hub.

High Point’s UPS employees continue to Live United, as well. Last week the High Point UPS customer service center held a “Book and Bag” fundraiser for United Way.  This 100% profit fundraiser consisted of collecting hard and soft back books that were donated along with purses, duffle bags, clutches, backpacks, garment bags, briefcases, fanny packs, cross bodies, attaché cases and luggage.  The gently used merchandise was either bid upon by prospective customers or priced to move! This three day event generated over $550 for United Way. Center supervisor Nicole L’Argent is proud of all the work that the center employees put into making it a successful event!

Ok, first of all, I should probably stop writing in the third-person plural. Second, that was the first time that I have ever typed the word “tweeple.” Tweeps?Aden and Lynne

Aden | I (Aden Hailemariam) am a Communications Specialist in the Marketing & Communications department at United Way of Greater Greensboro. I manage the social media accounts and do all things marketing. In addition, I coordinate the Latino Professional Forum that has recently become affiliated with United Way of Greater Greensboro. I became a part of the staff here in November of last year and since then it has been an experience that has brought together the names and faces and experiences that I have had since I first came to Greensboro as a freshman at UNCG in 2003. And I still have a way to go!

Lynne | Lynne Brandon is a volunteer with United Way of Greater Greensboro which includes her committee work with UWGG. Oh, and she is so much more! From Lynne’s website, you’ll know that she is a freelance journalist, researcher and reporter with 13 years experience including work as an editor in the publishing world. Her work in corporate communications includes teaching professional development courses, marketing and intranet content front page manager.
