Tocqueville Society
In 1835, French aristocrat and political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville observed what he believed made our young country special was “the spirit of voluntary association and America’s efforts for the common good.” The Tocqueville Society was created in 1972 by United Way of America to recognize those who have rendered outstanding service as volunteers in their own community or on a national level.
Today the Tocqueville Society fosters, promotes and recognizes the vital importance of voluntary community service and personal giving at an exceptional level.
Members of the Tocqueville Society and Tocqueville Women's Leadership make an annual contribution in the amount of $10,000 or more to United Way. The contribution is undesignated, or given in support of a United Way focus area or strategic initiative.
A Tocqueville Society Challenge Grant opportunity is available to those who want to make a multi-year commitment to join the Tocqueville Society and increase their support of United Way.
Tocqueville members lead the way. . .
. . . with contributions representing nearly 20% of United Way of Greater Greensboro’s annual campaign. Tocqueville members are saving and changing lives through philanthropic leadership.

Tocqueville Society Challenge Match Opportunity
A Tocqueville Challenge Match is available to match a gift of $5,000 or more to help donors become members of the Tocqueville Society or Tocqueville Women's Leadership. Whether someone is a first-time donor or looking to step up to the $10,000 level, anyone can take advantage of this generous program.
The program can be a two or three year commitment and is outlined below. In the first year, a personal commitment of $5,000 or more to United Way makes a donor eligible to receive a match to immediately become a Tocqueville Society member. By accepting match money, the donor agrees to pledge the full $10,000 over the following years.
| This Year's Pledge | Next Year's Pledge | Year Three Pledge | Match Over Three Years |
| $5,000 (earn $5,000 match) |
