Six United Way Partners Receive Statewide Spirit Awards

Greensboro, NC (February 15, 2019) – Six local United Way of Greater Greensboro partners were honored with Spirit of North Carolina Awards at United Way of North Carolina’s annual award luncheon on February 13. Guilford County Government was additionally honored with a Best Practice Showcase award.

On a yearly basis, United Way of North Carolina recognizes organizations who have succeeded in raising funds to support their community and have dedicated themselves to being part of the long-term solution to build stronger communities. Judges from across North Carolina reviewed more than 50 applications.

Leading beyond the traditional fundraising campaign, these winners created opportunities to educate employees on community needs, led by those at the top of the organizational chart; motivated campaign participants to give by exposing them to real stories of need; and provided volunteer opportunities so that donors could offer their knowledge and their hands to serve their community.

Local Spirit of NC Award winners include:

  • Alamance Elementary School
  • Guilford County Schools
  • Center for Creative Leadership
  • Guilford County Government
  • Guilford County Human Resources Department
  • Proctor & Gamble Manufacturing Company

“This year’s winners made their campaigns both fun and engaging while also focusing on communicating the message of United Way’s work so employees truly understand how they make an impact in our community through their gifts. We are grateful for their partnership and all they do for greater Greensboro,” said Julia Thomas, Campaign Director, United Way of Greater Greensboro.

UWNC also honored Guilford County Government with the Best Practice Showcase award. Guilford County Government was selected to present best practices and highlight their strategies which led to greater engagement, increased philanthropic culture, and larger monetary success during their campaign.

Best Practices Showcase:

  • Guilford County Government

Karen Fishel, Guilford County Director of Human Resources, accepted the award with the campaign team on behalf of all Guilford County employees.

“While there is a level of expectation of public service employees to serve the citizens of their community as defined by their job description, what elevates Guilford County employees is their sincere calling to serve above and beyond the expectation. Our United Way participation is but one example of the generosity and true servant hearts of our employees. I am immensely proud of their commitment to this worthy partnership and their contribution to positively impacting the lives of the citizens of Guilford County,” she said.

Winners were determined by a panel of 24 judges from United Way organizations across the state. For more information about the Spirit of North Carolina Award and a complete list of winners, visit
